What is used for mosquito control?

Conventional pesticides used to control mosquitoes include:

  • Malathion – Often used to treat crops against a wide array of insects, Malathion is sprayed directly onto vegetation, particularly bushes where mosquitoes like to rest. It has also been used in a 5% solution to fog yards. Small amounts used for mosquito control pose no threat to humans or wildlife and is actually often used to treat head lice.
  • Permethrin – A synthetic form of a natural insecticide found in chrysanthemum flowers, Permethrin falls into the chemical group, pyrethroids. Usually mixed with oil or water at around 1/100th lb per acre, Permethrin is applied in mist form. Although Permethrin won’t harm humans or animals in minute amounts,  it is toxic to bees and fish.

While both Malathion and Permethrin disrupt mosquitoes’ central nervous systems, these chemicals have recently been shown to be less effective in the fight against mosquitoes and vector-borne diseases due to widespread resistance to them. For this reason, and others, such as the health of honey bees, safe, innovative, and effective methods and materials have been developed to tackle mosquito control issues.
